About Lee Gabel Design + Visual Effects
Located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, my company is dedicated to quality visual effects (VFX) animation. I have been involved with computer graphics since 1982. My true passion, ever since I was a kid making stop-motion Super-8 movies, has always involved visual effects. It never left the back of my mind.
After graduating from the Applied Communication Program at Camosun College in 1992, I worked at a small graphic design firm for 6 years. The experience offered a firsthand look at the do’s and don’ts of running a business, as well as tremendous creative freedom. With this freedom came great responsibility. Managing large projects was a daily part of my role there. During this period, I had the good fortune to work with the CBC in producing their Broadcasters Handbook for the 15th Commonwealth Games. The handbook subsequently won the firm an international design award.
In 1996, I took my graphic design and business experience and translated it to the web part-time. As the number of clients increased, I needed more time to devote to my emerging business. In 1998, I officially left the graphic design firm and began working in graphic design for myself full-time.
In 1999, I changed my focus. Before now, I didn’t have the means to pursue my dream. Because of my success with graphic design, I had no excuse not to pursue what I really wanted to do: visual effects. I bought the necessary hardware and software and began learning to be a VFX animator. Over the next four years, I used the Internet as my classroom, utilizing online forums and gaining valuable feedback from many generous industry professionals who freely shared their knowledge. I owe much of my success to the generosity of others. Posting my experiences via my VFX journal is my way of giving back to the VFX community, so that others who are just starting out will have more resources to draw on.
To round out my skillset, I also have experience with video production (shooting, editing, and visual effects planning), scripting, storyboarding and computer programming.
Today, I am proud to be working in the film and television industry with other talented and creative ndividuals from such companies as Race Rocks Digital and Kaia Inc.
I take pride in what I do, even if it’s the simplest composite or camera matchmove. I enjoy working as part of a team, or independently, and respect the importance of meeting a deadline. Providing excellent service is always forefront in my mind when working on any project. I work with my clients to ensure that the final product is exactly what they envisioned.
